Harmonie includes a driver for the Grappler+, so you really can be printing
from GS/OS to the DeskJet within 5 or 10 minutes of unpacking the printer.
As far as printing from AppleWorks Classic...
When I first got my Hewlett-Packard printer, I installed the custom SEG.ER
drivers that the National AppleWorks User Group distributed on what they
called "The NAUG Printer Disk." After copying that to my AW directory on my
hard drive, it took me another 10 or 15 minutes of fiddling with the
interface codes for my particular parallel card to get it right. Since then,
I've also used the drivers from The NAUG Printer Disk to set up both AW4.x
and AW5.x.
The NAUG Printer Disk is available from Shareware Solutions II for $5.
That disk includes all 3 versions of The NAUG Printer Disk (for AW3 thru 5).
That said...if you want to manually retype all the special printer codes as
listed in the HP printer's manual, you don't need the NAUG AW drivers.
For others reading this who may be interested in getting a new HP printer,
Shareware Solutions II sells Harmonie, a set of GS/OS printer drivers for
DeskJets and LaserJets (and others) for $20. You can read about Harmonie, and
the other types of printers it works with at http://www.crl.com/~joko
BTW, there's only been two models of DeskJet that are incompatible with the
IIGS, and those two models are very, very clearly marked on the front as
"Windows Only" printers. And, those were only sold for a couple of months,
and were discontinued more than a year ago.
