It's quite simple, just turn it on and take careful notice
of what is displayed on the text screen (the screen where it
will say "Apple IIgs", centered at the top of the screen).
The 'ROM 01' and 'ROM 3' display additional information on
the lower half of the screen, specifically a copyright notice
and the firmware revision. The 'ROM 00' (original) just leaves
this area blank, so if you see nothing there, it is a ROM 00.
You can also see this screen if you perform a warm-boot--that
is press and hold down Apple-Control-Reset, then releasing the
last two keys while still continuing to hold down the Apple-key.
Example:
This is a ROM 01 at powerup/warm-boot...
