From the main screen, you should see the #)Inspect option. Press
the number of the character you want to Inspect. Then, when viewing the
character, the "E)QUIP" option should appear at the bottom of the
screen. Pressing "E" should let you Equip the character. For each group
of items you enter the number of the item you wish to equip-- in some
groups, you can equip more than one item.

 * next to an item means it is equipped.
 # next to an item means it can not be equipped by this character
? next to an item means that it is not fully identified (a Bishop
in your party can do this)
 - next to an item means that it is cursed

In Camp, you have the #)Inspect option as above; and you have
E)quip for the whole party. This E)quip lets you cycle through and equip
every member of the party. I do not recall how you pick a character to
equip during this cycling-- perhaps you press RETURN or the character #
to indicate that you wish to work with the character.
