Two years ago, when I bought a Performa 6400/180, several posts referred
to it as a "deadend" machine. Since then we've added RAM, cache, SCSI
peripherals and a video card, and upgraded the OS to 8.5. It's not as
fast as my G3, but neveretheless it's a snappy enough machine for my kids,
and has much nicer sound than the G3. Now someone has come out with a G3
upgrade card for it that plugs into the cache slot (for under $500). So
I'd say it has turned out to be "upgradeable" enough for a low-end
machine, and I expect the same will be true for the iMac, as far as the
needs of its target customers are concerned.
