Not exactly. System 4.0 introduced GS/OS v2.0, even though this
was the very first public release of that operating system. This of
course follows ProDOS 16 which started out at v1.0 in System 1.x.
GS/OS was more or less a complete rewrite of the OS from the ground
up, but was indeed version 2 of the core operating system.

Nope, actually System 6.0.1 uses GS/OS v4.02. It is not much of
a secret to tell what version of the Operating System is being used
by System Software. With System 1.0 through 3.2 (ProDOS-16), this
was displayed on the boot slash screen, very similar to ProDOS-8.
With System 4.0 through 6.0.1 (GS/OS) it was not made visable, but
you could easily see it by pressing the spacebar during the boot
sequence. This reports the GS/OS version and the versions of all
system extensions loaded.
I'm sure you've seen the text screen when GS/OS loads that says
"Welcome to the world of GS/OS". If not just hold the spacebar down
and you'll see it (unless you have a RamFAST SCSI, in which case it
will disable the card, heh).
