I haven't tried the 3 chip simms. However I have tried the 8 chip with
the empty 9th place and those wouldn't function. Regular 8 chip simms
are cheap and plentifull. Touching the case doesn't affect my IIgs, that
part of the simms are non conductive anyways.
I did try my card with 7 simms in my ROM 3. It very flaky. So much
so that my computer was almost unusable.
