Help With Ethernet Card?

Hi,
I downloaded AOL Instant Messenger and when I tried to run it, it somehow
blew out the connection to my cable modem (MediaOne).  I reinstalled the OS
to wipe out everything and start anew.  However, my computer still does not
see my ethernet card (TCP/IP info says nothing!) or the cable modem (which
is functioning perfectly).  What is going on?  Mediaone and AOL cannot help
at all.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
