: You can just stick a disk you don't intend to use anymore in the drive(s).

And to be honest with you, I've transported lots of Apple 5.25" drives
(not quite so many 3.5" drives) without taking any special precautions,
and have never had any problems which could be traced to normal jostling
in transport.  Years ago, I was on the equipment crew for a local
community education program and we had to carry computer systems from
schools all over the city to the central program facility, and the only
travel-related damage we had to deal with was broken keyswitches when the
systems shifted and landed on each other...
