You might want to think about upgrading to the latest version of ProTerm, 
which is v3.1. 

It's been so many years, I just don't remember the details, but when I first 
got a 14.4, I just couldn't get my new modem to work with ProTerm v3.0. 
So, I upgraded to v3.1, and all has been well ever since...
