Not much more than what it was intended for.

I doubt you would like the results. The cassette output works pretty
much like the speaker: it generates a square wave. It should be
possible to get anything that the IIe can produce on its speaker out
onto a cassette tape, which should give you some idea of the quality.
The cassette input is equally limited: it can only sense two levels on
the tape, so all signals will be reduced to a square wave again.

Yes. All you need is a Super Serial Card and appropriate software, e.g.
ProTerm. This will give you access to a BBS or a UNIX shell account,
but I wouldn't hold out hope for accessing a PPP/SLIP account, or
running a graphical web browser.
