cable problem

Hi:
How can I tell whether or not I have a high-speed cable?
I use a 14.4k/s modem which loses occasional bytes of text.
So, I select 9.6k/s setting to be sure to get all bytes.
I ordered a hi-speed cable which did NOT imnprove the
situation. So, how do I find out what kind of cable I
actually have?
Is there anything else which needs to be considered?
