I think what I did with small things (if I could) was tape them to the
back of a piece of lamination.

Are you sure the handheld one was called the ThunderScanGS?  The
regular TS does super high-res, 16 shades of gray, etc--wasn't the
handheld one called Lightning Scan?  And does it have some way of
reassembling several more-than-4"-wide scans?  Those handhelds are
cool, since they have OCR available for them.
