GS monitor problems

someone gave me a clean rom3 gs today and im testing it with an applecolor rgb
monitor. i am getting video, but the focus is off and it took several minutes
until the display got brighter but its still not very good, even with the image
adjustment wheels turned way up. besides reverting back to the matching
composite mono monitor i also got for free, is there any adjustments that can
be made to the rgb display? 
also, i guess id like to see about getting an operating system besides prodos
running on the gs. i have the ability to download on my mac IIcx, so is it
possible to make gs system disks on my mac? if so, where do i go to acquire the
files?
