One follow-up idea on woes-- have you checked that you have a
correctly wired "Hi-speed hand-shaking modem cable"?
According to the Spectrum manual and the manual for ProTERM 3.1,
the correct wiring for the Hi-Speed cable is ...

The Spectrum manual has a note which says that some cables swap
connections to pins 2 and 7 on the Mini-DIN-8 plug. Such a cable
requires using an alternate port driver with Spectrum. My guess is that
a cable with connections to pins 2 and 7 swapped would not work
correctly with ProTERM's usual driver, either.
