I believe this has actually been addressed in previous postings not too
long ago. As I remember, Scantron Quality Computer was contacted but
the reply was basically that they didn't want to bother with the time
(however short) it would take to pull it from the site. Interestingly,
portions of AW5 are copyrighted by several different folks including
Randy Brandt, Dan Verkade, as well as Apple Computer among others.
So, even if one of these copyright holders were to contact an archive
and request that AW5 be pulled from the site, the archive manager
can hide behind the claim that they are waiting on one or all of the
other copyright holders requesting that the software be pulled before
it is actually removed from the site.
I do agree that it would only take 5 minutes to drop an e-mail to an
archive site. But, you know how companies of any reasonable size soon
lose track of who is responsible for older products in this rapidly
changing software industry. And, the few people left who perhaps
could help with the issue usually would not be the first contact
person you get a hold of on the telephone :-)
BTW, I wouldn't take the inactivity of SQC as approval to distribute
AW5 on an archive site. It is simply that the person spoken to didn't
think it would be worth their time.
