You probably wont welcome this, tho. From what you decribe your picture
tube is going bad. What is happening is when you first turn it on, all
is ok and then darkens and loses red is an indication that the red gun in
the picture tube is shorting out by heat expansion of one of the
elements, more than likely the red G1 and cathode are shorting together.
