Sirius! So you finally decided the good folks at Alltech were not "crooks"
after all. ;-)
Seriously, the folks at Alltech are good people. Glad you decided to
order something from them.
The ROM 3 did have a problem with the RAM disk and 8MB on older
GS/OS revisions. However, this is fixed with System 6.0.1. Just use
System 6.0.1 and you can have 8MB and your RAM disk too.

It does not happen on ROM 3 units with System 6.0.1 installed.

I agree completely. That's the fun in using these old units! ;-) In fact,
there are a few "gee-whiz" wares that do in fact utilize 8 megs. I want
to get 8 megs soon to use these just for the heck of it.
