So it doesn't require Directx anymore?  Is there even a Directx
equivalent for NT 4?

BTW, I agree with your other message about code portability.  If
you're writing it on *nix, then code portability is obviously an
issue.  Once you're on Win32 (or Mac, or OS/2 or whatever), then I say
go for performance.
