The reason is simple: the Apple //c+, unlike the previous versions of
the //c subset, does not accept a DC power input. The original //c and
its two immediate revisions (the first one was compatible with a special
memory expansion board, and the next was compatible with the newly
introduced UniDisk 3.5" drive) did require a DC input, hence the
infamous brick-on-a-rope external power supply (an AC to DC converter).
The //c+, however, had a much smaller power supply incorporated into the
main unit, needing only a universal 3-prong AC cord for power.
Unfortunately, this also makes it incompatible with the previous //c
battery packs since (a) they have the wrong connector, and (b) they
generate a DC voltage.
As much as I like the changes made to the original //c design, I think
Apple Computer should have thought more carefully about the likely
effects of messing with something as fundamental as the power supply
setup. Then again, we are all forsaken children of the technicolor fruit
company, eh?
