     There is no easy way to turn color ON or OFF for just part of a
screen on a composite color monitor. On these monitors, Text usually
looks best in monochrome. It would make sense to shut down the Color
Burst signal for all Text screens rather than bother with adding
hardware to allow showing Text in color on a composite monitor.

     My guess is that your GS is, probably, working properly.

     Just a moment ... Okay! On page 78 of the IIgs Hardware Reference
Manual Apple says: "In text mode, all color information is removed from
the composite video signal, resulting in a monochrome text display."
This indicates that your GS is doing what it is supposed to do.
