     I'm pretty sure TAB just gets you to the input point after the
password-- i.e. the "Send", "Enter", etc. button.

     After typing in your password, try TAB and RETURN. (You may need
another RETURN after this-- do not know for Lynx.)

     Good point. One way or another it probably is a browser-related
feature.
