does anyone know what the apple /// interlace upgade does?

hello,

I picked up a couple apple/// interlace upgades at a computer junk store a
while back and haven't figured out that it does. It comes with a patch cord
that has a switch on one end, and the other has a plug in on the other. the kit
also come with a chip ( i don't have it in front of me).

any ideas would be helpful.
