Now I think about it, I believe it's the other way round.
We all know that there were upgrade kits for Apple //es, including the
"IIgs" sticker, so that an upgraded //e DOES look like the one in the
picture.
We also know that there were NO Apple IIgss in Apple //e cases produced
by Apple (to the best of our knowledge, that is. Anyone cares to put us
right?).

My conclusion is that the poor SELLER was misinformed; that he didn't
know about upgrade kits and that he honestly thought that he had a
"super rare" Apple IIgs.
And when the "knowledgable friend" tried to rectify this, his
explanation didn't replace the original text (as he intended) but simply
got stuck to the end of it by mistake.

And the confusion of it being a ROM 00 or a ROM 01 isn't an issue. If it
was a ROM 00 originally, it could well have been upgraded. Or do you
mean that there should be a price difference between ROM 00 and ROM 01
machines?
