I have to agree with you Randy (scary, isn't it?)...

However, in this case, I think Apple's got it RIGHT.  The PCT programs
the same Super Wozniak controller chip used in a superdrive card/Mac
to use MFM in PCT mode, but see how flaky it is?  Apple probably
realized this and decided to shield the user from it.  That seems to be
Apple's philosophy...give them the computer but make it foolproof so
that users won't screw up...even, at times, at the expense of versatility.

Can you imagine if Macs COULD use 720k disks in 800k drives and
it were as flaky as PCT behavior?  Nathan would freak!  ;-)
