translating Apple2GS document

I would like to translate a lengthy document I prepared in Apple2GS to
Microsoft word. The problem is that the document is saved in appleworks
GS page layout format--which my translators cannot recognize. I have
tried selecting text from the format, copying it to new text -- but the
computer freezes up at the request.
Any suggestions?
