Most DVD player manufacturers could give a rat's ass about laserdisc since
it was never more than a niche. Pioneer is the only company making a combo
player and is about the only ones making LD players at all.

If not for Pioneer, anyone with LDs would have to supplement their LD player
with a DVD player, much like a IIgs owner has to buy a separate Mac to have
the latest. There would be no "giving up" involved since you could still play
LDs on your existing player. Indeed, there are entire studios e.g. Fox who
aren't doing DVD at all, plus it was and still is the case that LD has the
better version of lots of titles. For instance, Scream on LD is an unrated
director's cut but on DVD it's the R rated theatrical version, and the DVD
zealots are griping about that. Anyone who gets rid of their LDs or even
doesn't consider buying them still is an idiot.

Boy I smell another endless off topic thread brewing
