     Someone may come up with a for-sure known Vulcan fixer. You could
try posting to comp.sys.apple2.marketplace with the idea of getting the
owner of a no longer used Vulcan or a surplus seller to respond.

     The following places offer Apple II parts, support, and/or repairs.
The odds are fairly good that at least one will be able to help ...

     My own mem Expansion card is an AE 4MB GS-RAM III (in a ROM-01);
so, I have no experience with 8MB Expansion setups. Supposedly, 8MB
problems (with large file transfers, using DMA, getting a RAM5 RAM disk
to work, etc.) plague mainly ROM-03 owners. Evidently, System 6.0.1
includes a patch which helps with some ROM-03 setups.

     One guess is that, in booting some pre-'6.0.1 version of System
(like '5.0.4), you have not installed some drivers which you normally
install under System 6.0.1. Possibly, some generic driver is used which
ends up getting the wrong parms and bombs into the monitor.


     If you check Apple's Hardware References for the IIgs (the original
and with-ROM-03 releases), you will find that Apple clearly states that
the GS supports up to 4MB Expansion RAM. A look at the address lines
available at the Mem Expansion Slot underscores Apple's statement. To
address more Expansion RAM requires using a kludge.

     The above plus numerous postings relating to 8MB problems led to a
couple emails being sent to Sequential and Alltech a few days ago.
Basically, the emails asked for _something_ by way of specifics about
what ROM-01 and ROM-03 setups work-- e.g. with popular accelerator cards
and popular SCSI interfaces. Neither Sequential nor Alltech has as yet
supplied any specific information. Perhaps they do not have any.

     As Mitch, Nathan, and I have tried to say in one way or another,
8MB setups must be regarded as somewhat experimental.
