Do you mean on an HFS volume or a ProDOS volume?

It is not possible to set the file type of an HFS folder - it doesn't
have type and creator fields like normal files.

It should be possible to set the auxiliary type of a ProDOS folder, and
I've done this with low-level tools such as GS/OS Excerciser. You
shouldn't change the file type (I seem to recall this not working via
GS/OS calls).

This sounds like a user interface limitation. If the program is using
the Standard File selection mechanism (single file, not multi-file), and
hasn't provided a special method for picking a folder (an extra button),
then you cannot pick a folder (only open it to access files inside the
folder).

Does UtilityWorks have a method of renaming files? This would also be
unable to rename a directory unless they added an appropriate button.
