That's what Al Capone thought. Once the beaurocrats decide they want a
piece of your hide and they want you as a guest at the greybar hotel,
they can nail you to the wall for clerical errors in a press release.
Bill Gates does believe that he is above the law, that Microsoft has a
right to force manufacturers to install their operating system on 120%
of all machines sold (they use price tiers to make it cheaper to buy
120% than 100%). He believes he has the right to destroy people's hard
drives, to erase sensitive information, and to render other systems
unusable.
Bill Gates expects every customer to indemnify him against any damage that
any Microsoft product may do, reguardless of how diliberate and intentional
the act was. Many believe he should have gone to jail for the "Tree Of
Evil" virus, or for the "Ceasar's Palace Incident", or for the "Macrovirus
Wiretapping". Many publishers would like to nail him for illegally
monitoring interactions between the publishers and their customers,
allowing Microsoft to gain access to the most lucrative markets on the Web.
At minimum, Microsoft should be regulated by the SEC, FCC, FTC, IRS,
Treasury, FBI, and CIA and forced to play by the same rules as their
competitors. Microsoft began using encryption before export restrictions
were eased. Microsoft restricts public statements regarding performance,
reliability, stability, and customer satisfaction. Microsoft intimidates
customers who publicly state that they are dissatisfied. When companies
are forced to file penalties and SEC filings due to failures of Microsoft
Software, Microsoft expects them to make public statement endorsing the
product line, even though the failures may have cost as much as $10 million
in fines and penalties for one failure. Microsoft monitors transactions
flowing through it's MSN routers, and encourages the routing of ISP
traffic through MSN routers. Microsoft does not abide by voluntary
guidelines which made the Internet and the Web what it is today. It
uses proprietary protocols to avoid the audit and management controls
that are considered essential to the success of the internet.
