If you take a look back, I'm sure you will find that Apple didn't
release the documentation on how to write drivers until System 5 or 6
came out.  I can't remember exactly but I know it took them a real
long time to finally release this information.

That means that before that point, no one could write a driver to
support any kind of printer, interface card or anything.
