     You can type in programs and run them; but, to save or load
programs to/from a diskette, you need to boot a Disk Operating System
like DOS 3.3 or ProDOS.

     BASIC and a machine language "monitor" you can enter via the
CALL-151 command are a kind of operating system in ROM. (You can, even,
save/load programs on casette tape; but, that capability is not used
very much any more.)

     A way to have DOS 3.3 or ProDOS ready to go is to boot a diskette
when you start your computer. You can get bootable DOS 3.3 and ProDOS
diskettes via Apple II user friends, local Apple clubs, contacting
comp.sys.apple2 users, schools, and various software vendors.
