Dear Nathan,
Unfortunately, someone involved seriously in software writing,
publishing, and reviewing is, more or less, constrained to respond to
repeated untrue and, really, malicious charges of software piracy.
For the record, on 4/10/98 a message was sent to youe ISP at
abuse@visi.com regarding lies and slander about "piracy" made via your
visi.com account. Documentation (in the form of postings by you) was
attached.
For the record, the same message also contained documentation of
continuing attacks by you and a few remaining associates on Charles
Turley ("Dr. Tom") along with other information concerning effects of
these attacks. The attacks are presented on your personal faqs site and
on a few linked web sites devoted almost exclusively to ridiculing Dr.
Tom and calling him a "pirate". (But, then, you've also insinuated that
Henrik 'Ratte' Gudat, developer of the Bernie A2 emulator, is a promoter
of piracy.)
The note contains no threats or recommendations. It simply informs.
My wish was that your ISP counsel you against further lies and
slander. It was believed that you would make an attempt to avoid future
lies and slander. It was believed that your gratuitous, malicious
attacks on Charles Turley via your personal faqs site might be removed--
hence your site is still listed as a resource in the comp.sys.apple2
FAQs Main Hall file.
Your continued use of visi.com services to propagate lies and
slander makes both you and visi.com look bad.
Regarding Asimov and the new Asimov GS site. If you actually
somehow believe these are "pirate sites", then the proper course of
action is to contact the copyright owners with your complaints. Legally,
the owner of a copyright is the only potentially injured party in such
cases.
My guess is that you will discover that many copyright holders
already know about Asimov and that they do not at all mind seeing their
old, out of print wares being enjoyed by 1998 users. Indeed, many
probably appreciate the free advertising.
And, should you discover that a currently in-print program (e.g.
SuperConvert 4, etc.) appears on an Asimov site, my suggestion is that
you notify Asimov's web master. Remember, a lot of old programs are
uploaded to these sites by emulator enthusiasts. A few that are not so
old may slip through once in a while. With so many wares to archive, the
Asimov sites have nothing to gain and much to lose by ignoring valid
complaints.
Finally, it may come as a surprise that there is no wish here that
you leave Csa2. If that happens, it will be yet another injury you've
managed to inflict upon yourself.
