Shortcuts are only created when you drag-n-drop an application's icon. You
will see a little icon next to the cursor before you drop it. An icon with
an arrow tells you you'll get a shortcut. A plus sign tells you you'll get
a copy. No icon means you'll get a move. So to always be sure you get a
copy or a move when you want it, Control-Drag to get a copy, and Shift-Drag
to get a move. This works both on the same drive, and between drives, on
any kind of files. Or you can right-drag and you'll get a menu that pops up
when you drop it, and you can select copy, move, or create shortcut.
