i'm also 'revisting' some old sierra graphical adventures!  currently
stuck on leisure suit larry3, but i recently bought a cd with kq 1-6 on
and i'm looking forward to replaying some old ones and playing new
ones!

i can't remember this but is it the vampire castle scenario?  what i
mean is that what the stake's for (killing a vampire)?  have you tried
'pick up/get/steal/remove' stake? perhaps the 'stake' is a 'stick'?

also i think sierra have a hint line (i might be wrong) and i do know
that there are various 'walk throughs' out there in web-land
