: What are "Don Lancaster types putting hacks"?
: You know as well as I do that Postscript is Postscript is Postscript. Don
: simply used AppleWriter's extended capabilities to directly download
: Postscript code to the LaserWriter.
Hand coded postscript that is. Through a direct serial connection, which isn't
really supported. I can see Apple marketing such a kludge while touting the
ease of use found in all of Apple's stuff.
: Apple knew that the A2 could do this simple task, but they denied it.
: They owned AppleWorks and AppleWriter, so no one could change what
: those programs could do out of the box but Apple.
Show me book, chapter, and verse where Apple ever explicitly said that you
cannot use a serial connection to dump postscript code to a LW.
: It would not have been hard for Apple to have added Postscript support
: to AppleWorks and AppleWriter. Publish-It! is an 8-bit program that
: prints beautiful LaserWriter Postscript graphics and text using just the
: Super Serial Card and LaserWriter. It proves that workstation cards and
: the GS are not needed. Even after BOTH Publish-It! and Springboard
: Publisher came out, both supporting graphics and text Postscript to
: LaserWriters, Apple was still officially silent about the A2's ability to use
: LaserWriters. Publish-It! and Springboard Publisher are not hacks now
: are they? BOTH these programs used standard Serial with the LW.
What would you call the IW emulator? I can get Appleworks to print to my LW
on my //e with workstation card. You must have another name for it if you
don't consider it postscript support.
You're conveniently forgetting that 8 bit software has no print manager style
consistent way of providing printer support and apps have to fend for them-
selves. Apple need not support/advertise whatever people come up with. It's
to the credit of software publishers who put out apps that do more than what
Apple itself supports. Apple provided its flavor of support, i.e. using the
IW emulator over localtalk, and other companies made their own. What's wrong
with that?
