Sure! For the sending computer, use "AT D" and for the other computer,
use "AT A". Press enter after typing in the right command.

You would ideally have one person at each computer. Unhook your
telephone line until the carrier signal drops. This will leave you with a
clean line. I successfully AT Ded on the PC and ran quickly enough
to the GS to AT A all by myself...but you have to be fast.

On the PC using HyperTerminal, type "AT D" and on the GS using
Spectrum, type "AT A". Don't press return on either computer yet.
Have the person at the PC press return first. A split second later, the
person at the GS should press return. The modems will handshake
and connect at their highest speed. Oh yeah, don't forget to hang
up the phone quickly after pressing return on both computers so that
the line is clean. You can then start Zmodem at any time. This
works like a charm...

The reason you could not get your direct cable connection working
is possibly degradation caused by a 50 foot serial cable. Modems
are built to send information over long distances. Your phone wiring,
with the help of your two modems, should be more reliable at these
distances and thus able to transfer files faster.
