Re: Commodore drives can be controlled on Apple II serial!

Yo!

It is possible to hook up a 1571 drive to an Apple for the purposes of
reading MFM (MS-DOS) 5.25" diskettes.

The Star Commander source code would be a good place to start. In the
meantime, you can look up the following documents on c128/1571 serial
bus/burst mode programming:

C128 I/O map- Contains bit banging registers:
http://www.hut.fi/Misc/cbm/docs/c128-io.html

C128 Memory Map: (Not a disassembly)
http://www.hut.fi/Misc/cbm/docs/c128-ram.html

C128 ROM Map: (Not a disassembly)
http://www.hut.fi/Misc/cbm/docs/c128-rom.html

1571 Burst documentation (several docs):
http://www.funet.fi/pub/cbm/c128/programming/documents/index.html

C=Hacking #3 contains complete information on Burst commands:
http://www.jbrain.com/chacking/showtext.phtml?issue=3

C=Hacking #4 contains complete information on reading MS-DOS disks:
http://www.jbrain.com/chacking/showtext.phtml?issue=4

C=Hacking #5 contains more information on reading MS-DOS disks:
http://www.jbrain.com/chacking/showtext.phtml?issue=5

Whew! That should get you Apple guys all warmed up. :) Good luck.
