On sensitive cards, even slight heat can cause glitches. A fan blowing
from the outside might not do the trick. It appears that on Zips, the
culprit is often the ASIC chip. A heat sink or CPU fan on it could do
the trick.
Suspect two is physical damage to your card. You mentioned that
you had the sockets modified on the card. Since the difference
between the chips used for 16K and the chips used for 64K is an
extra address pin, faulty soldering of the sockets could result in the
16K setting working and the 64K setting not. If the actual traces
on the card are damaged, you may be out of luck. If there is just
not enough solder to make contact on some pins, the problem might
be curable.
