I asked about IDE controllers that support big drives a few days
ago and got some very helpful answers from the nice people
here.

The Focus card and SHH's filecard both are designed to support
large sized hard disks (up to 2GB). Some people have run
500MB and 800MB drives off a Focus, I'm told.

If you only want to use ProDOS, then you are limited by the
partition number because ProDOS volumes are 32MB max.
With 40 partitions being the maximum number supported by the
Focus, that's 32MB * 40 = 1280MB, so look for a drive 1.2GB
or less.

Your desktop is going to be very crowded with 40 partitions,
so you should make a smaller icon for hard disk partitions so
that they will fit. You can save desktop space by using HFS
on some partitions. HFS is not bad if you are careful and if
you don't compile programs. I have not had any problems with
HFS partitions so far. Compilers probably manipulate many
files very frequently, increasing the chance of a problem. So
go ahead and slap on that 500MB to 1.2GB hard drive. It is
basically impossible to find anything less in size.
