I may have had a breakthrough.  It seems to work (even after switching
to port function & back again several times) on Slots 1 & 2.  I
suppose this means that the problem was something peculiar to the
mouse port/Slot 4, rather than something endemic in the IIgs?

Can anyone confirm this?
