    You can set both ends to 57600 baud, that is the maximum speed
the Apple IIgs serial port handles (the 486 should also handle it
too, even if it doesn't have a 16550 UART on the motherboard or a
serial card). 

    I used to transfer files between my old 486DX4-133 and IIgs 
using a null-modem connector (between their two serial cables) 
and never had any problem at that speed. I used either Spectrum
or ProTERM 3.1 on the Apple side, with HyperTerminal, Terminate
or ProComm Plus on the IBM side. Does your IIgs have a hardware
handshaking serial cable?
