No, that's not going to affect the drive behavior or performance. All
defaults will still work fine with the drive.

There's something wrong with the drive (most likely), or the drive
controller (less likely), is my guess. What model number is the
drive? I assume it used to work correctly with the GS? Do you have
any other drives to test and compare with?
