If you have the $FF ROM in your //c (the original ROM) then you have no
memory self-test and you cannot use a 3.5" disk drive.  The upgrade ROM
gives you the self-test (so that when a RAM fails you can find out which
one.  Apparently the //c is prone to RAM failure for some reason), and
support for the white Unidisk 3.5.
