Spectrum problem

I recently bought Spectrum. After installation, everything seems to load
well but then it hits a "Welcome to Spectrum 2.1" blue screen & it freezes.
 
So I deinstall & shift boot & reinstall. Then shift boot again to try the
program w/ no inits/das. Spectrum  then asks to load the
hierachic init, then does so; then load all extras etc, then go to
Welcome to Spectrum 2.1 blue screen & freeze.
 
This is an a zipped ROM 3 w/ 4 megs of Ram & 80 meg focus card.
 
Any ideas what the problem is? Neither Earl Childers nor anyone at
Seven Hills responds to email. I am sure there is a simple solution, but
it eludes me. If it can't install or run with no inits or DAs, what do I
try next?
 
 
Also; someone has since told that the VT100 is text based, the same as
ProTerm How does one get to use the GUI display
(say the Spectrum SHR or better) on a shell account w/ Pine email,
tin newsreader, lynx etc. ??
 
Not that I am having any luck getting past the first freeze, but I hope
someone will have an idea for me to try.
