Please read the comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at
http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html section 2.6 on the GS.
There were on the order of 50,000 of those cases with the silkscreened
stuff, and most of those were sold with the original ROM version,
which was fairly buggy and cannot run modern GS software. As the
upgrade was free from Apple for a while, the best way to check on
things is to power up the system and check on ROM version that way.
