Probably, it is not a "feature". Maybe, the parms only work right
for the original release.

NULL modem works well for transferring stuff to/from Apple II and
PC or Mac. For a NULL modem connection, Modem MGR, ProTerm, and
COMM.SYSTEM are some wares that should work as telecom programs on the
IIe side; Hyperterm and Telemate work fine on the PC side.
The process and cables are described in the csa2 FAQs file
F002T1TCOM on Ground at

The copier (named U5BACKER) in U5MBONGS.SHK makes a deprotected
Ultima V boot disk copy useable on a II+ or IIe that will transfer
characters from Ultima IV.
Fortunately, there is another approach which you might try. In
Issue #62 of COMPUTIST, Peter Pebler describes a way to patch DOS in
order to copy the Ultima V boot disk. His process is ...
1. Boot a DOS 3.3 diskette
2. At the usual Applesoft prompt, do a CALL-151 to get to the monitor
3. Enter ...
B98B:A5 2D C9 10 90 04 E9 11 85 2D 18 60
4. Enter E003G to get back to the Applesoft prompt
5. RUN COPYA and copy the Ultima V boot disk to another diskette
I tried the above and it did not work. However, it seemed to be
close to working. When trying to make deprotected copies with COPYA, a
'near miss' sometimes indicates that the problem is in the INIT which
COPYA does or that a DOS patch has shut off some error checking and a
copy error went undetected. It seemed like a good idea to try a
variation. The process below did work:
1. Boot a DOS 3.3 diskette-- this can be for-real DOS 3.3 or ESDOS ][
or Prontodos. I booted an ESDOS ][ diskette. INIT a diskette to serve as
the copy disk-- I used COPY II+ to just FORMAT a diskette for DOS 3.3.
Either way, you have a copy disk which you know made it through a format
without bombing.
2. LOAD COPYA
3. Change Line 250 (or whatever Line in your version does the INIT
command) to
250 FT= 1
4. At the usual Applesoft prompt, do a CALL-151 to get to the monitor
5. Enter ...
B98B:A5 2D C9 10 90 04 E9 11 85 2D 18 60
6. Do a RESET to get back to the Applesoft prompt
7. Do a RUN and copy the Ultima V boot disk to the formatted copy disk
The resulting boot disk copy was tested and worked okay for
transferring a character from Ultima IV and starting play on our II+.
The copy is deprotected and easy to back up. (The other original
diskettes in the Ultima V set are not protected.)
By the way, the directions for doing a character transfer are not
entirely clear. At one point you are told to insert the Ultima IV
Britannia Disk. If your U4 charcter is saved on a copy of the U4
Britannia Disk, that is the disk to insert.

As far as I know, there is one official release of Ultima IV.
We have just one MockingBoard; so, I've never tried U4 with two
boards. One board can be in the standard Slot 4 position. If your 2nd MB
isn't being recognized, you might try moving it to a different Slot. My
guess is that the board should not be in Slot 3 or Slot 6.
As I recall, Ultima IV's process for setting up access to a 2nd MB
is kind of cumbersome. You may need to experiment with U4's menu's and
options. Also, U4 may expect that one board or the other will support
speech.
