The situation is not quite as dire as you paint it. While it is true that very 
few new commercial things are coming out, many shareware and freeware 
developers are continuing to update their programs, and even introduce new 
ones. Just one example is the current post on comp.binaries.apple2 of the 
updrade to BSC-It. I am also planning a major upgrade of PIX.WHIZ, my New Print 
Shop graphics editor program. I am sure that other developers can post things 
they are working on. Granted, some of these utilities are not as glamorous as 
games, but they qualify as software development, nonetheless. Also, many of the 
things being released now are not trumpeted very loudly, so you need to keep 
your eyes open for news of software releases.
