Very true. The PC variants of the two most popular browsers will not,
alas, let you specify to use binary mode for a file they _think_ has
got to be text.
There is a solution to that other than Lynx: The company hosting the
web site can change their server configuration to either assume binary
on unknown extensions, or add .shk and .bxy to the list of binary
ones. Arrowweb did this for me; I don't know how Richard's provider
would react to such a request.
