You can do it with a regular minidin8 serial cable -- I have my Apple IIgs
hooked to a Mac SE/30 this way - I don't have the IIgs system files on the
Mac (I don't think this would work....) but you can make a network boot disk
with the Apple IIgs system installer and then boot and use apps off the Macs
hard disk.
