failure to read cd roms - thinks they're audios

My apple won't read certain cd roms- the 2 in question are music related,
but have interactive features- coldcut and classical music for dummies.

It thinks that theyre audio cds, but when it comes to playing them it says
the operation could not be completed- please ensure you have loaded an
audio cd or that the apple cd rom drive has been prpoerly connected.

The drive is properly connected- e.g. I can load the game "you don't know jack"

and the problem is not the cd's now I've found a second one. 

Any help gratefully received.
